A blank metal face can feel more honest than a human smile. On a static robot head, a narrow beam of light angled from above carves deep eye sockets and a shaded mouth; the same hardware under soft frontal lighting looks calm, even kind, despite zero change in mechanics or code.
The blunt truth is that emotion here is a projection engine in the viewer, not a property of the object, and decades of research on pareidolia and the fusiform face area show how aggressively the visual cortex tries to assign mood once it detects two dark shapes and a line in a roughly facial layout.
