Each cache site subtly edits competition for light, water, and phosphorus, while the disturbed soil boosts aeration and shifts microbial community composition around the buried seed.
Even the depth of those tiny pits carries weight. Seeds placed just below the litter layer gain insulation from temperature swings and protection from seed predators, improving germination probability and early xylem development. As seedlings take hold, their roots tap into mycorrhizal networks that run through the same loosened soil the squirrel churned, linking new trees into preexisting fungal circuits and extending the animal’s unintended redesign of habitat structure.
